Coordination number and name registration

Coordination Number:
To be able to apply for a passport for a child born abroad, you must first apply for a coordination number.

The child must be present when the application is filed and must be accompanied by at least one legal guardian/parent. Processing time is 6-8 weeks. Read more about the process and required documents at the Swedish Embassy's website.

Please contact the Consulate in order to make an appointment to apply for a coordination number.

Name Registration:
If you do not have any intention of applying for a passport for your child, then there is no need to apply for a coordination number. You should in this case just make a name registration directly with the Swedish Tax Agency.

Active or Inactive Coordination Numbers:

New rules apply sin 2021 aiming to remove coordination numbers that have become redundant. This means that after 5 years of issuance or reactivation a coordination number will become inactive (vilande). It may be reactivated during a passport renewal or similar action which require a coordination number. Read more about this on the Swedish Embassy's website.
